Monash musician honoured by Royal Academy of Music

Dr Kenji Fujimura, Deputy Head of the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, has been elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in the 2015 RAM Honours.

Based in London, RAM is an institution of world renown, training nearly 700 students from over 50 countries in over 20 musical disciplines every year.

Associateships are awarded to past students of the Academy who have distinguished themselves in the music profession, and made a significant contribution in their particular field.

Dr Fujimura, who spent two years in London in the 1990s as a postgraduate student focusing on piano and fortepiano at at the RAM, said he was happy with the announcement. Since then he has forged a successful career as a performer, composer and pedagogue.

“The news came as a real surprise to me and was very unexpected, but I am absolutely delighted,” Dr Fujimura said.

An international prize-winning composer, Dr Fujimura has been at Monash since 2002. His recent successes include selection in the 2013 Musicweb International Recordings of the Year – Romantic Piano Trios (Divine Art dda25102), 2014 Limelight Recording of the Year for Chamber Music – The Messiaen Nexus (Move Records MD3369), as well as winning the 2014 Virtual Artists International Composition Competition. His Echoes of the Silver Screen for piano trio was premiered at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 17 April, and his next CD – The complete piano music of William Hurlstone (Toccata Classics TOCC 0289) – will be released in May.

Dr Fujimura will be presented with his Associateship by Dame Jenny Abramsky, Chairman of RAM’s Governing Body later this month.
